The Profound Lesson You Learn When You Hit Rock Bottom

Season 7 Episode 714
Aired on 09/11/2016 | CC tv-14
If anyone knows what it's like to hit rock bottom, it's author Glennon Doyle Melton. In her first memoir, Carry On, Warrior, Glennon described her first rock-bottom moment: She was 26, unmarried and an addict, and she found herself hungover on the bathroom floor, holding a pregnancy test and shaking. Her second personal crisis came when her marriage was rocked by her husband's admission of infidelity.

Yet, Glennon tells Oprah, rock bottom isn't a place you should fear. Sometimes, crisis is necessary, she says; it strips away what's weighing you down, and reveals your core self. "That's what crisis does, has done for me," she says. "It comes into my life, and I have to watch everything fall away that I thought that I needed so I can find out what's left over. And what was left over the first time and what was left over the second time is really my faith and my hope and my love. Those are the things that can't be taken from me."

Find out why Glennon says that all women who have hit rock bottom learn to tackle life fearlessly and with humor.
