On the surface, the two lead characters in Sue Monk Kidd's The Invention of Wings are very different people. Set in 19th-century Charleston, South Carolina, the novel chronicles the relationship between Sarah Grimké, a member of a privileged white family, and her personal maidservant, Hetty "Handful."
