How Falling in Love Makes You a Better Person

Father Richard Rohr believes that within every person lies a true self and a false self. Your goal in life, he says, is to follow whatever path brings you to your true self. One thing that helps us to become more authentic is to fall in love. "To fall in love, you have to take the risk of changing yourself for this person," Father Richard says.

That's also the reason Father Richard says many relationships don't last. "You have to let go of who you thought you were before you love that person. You're giving them power to change you," he says. "If you don't give your friend, your partner, power to change you, I don't think you love them. You know? And your unconscious knows that. Your soul knows that."
