Ralph Angel Tells Blue About His Criminal Past

After a home visit from the Department of Children & Family Services, Blue is curious about why they came to see him and Ralph Angel. Ralph Angel explains that they just wanted to make sure that everything was okay. He then apologizes to Blue if he was frightened, admitting that he was a little scared himself.

Blue's curiosity leads him to ask his father another question: "What's a record?"

"You know when I tell you not to do something and you do it anyway? Then I've got to put you on time-out?" Ralph Angel explains. "When you was a baby, I did something I shouldn't have. I had to go away for a little while and think about what I'd done."

Ralph Angel pauses before divulging the full truth about his past. "I was in prison, Blue. You know what prison is?"

"It's where bad people go," Blue responds. "Are you a bad person, Pop?"

"No, not a bad person. Did some bad things. Took things that wasn't mine," Ralph Angel says. "I need you to know something. I regret the things I've done, and I ain't never gonna do them again. You understand? I ain't gonna let nothing take me away from you ever again."

And with that, Ralph Angel scoops Blue up into his arms for a hug only a father can give.
