Landry Isn't Going to Let Charley's Rise to the Top Be an Easy One

From the day Charley arrived in St. Josephine Parish, she was treated by the most powerful landowners in the parish, the Landry family, as a meddling outsider. From offering money to threatening violence, the Landrys tried to force Charley to relinquish her father's land and go back to Los Angeles.

It didn't work. Instead, Charley doubled down. She created the Queen Sugar Mill, a place for black farmers to have their sugarcane crop processed without being lied to or ripped off, which took a bite out of Sam Landry's profits.

Now that Charley is a true force to be reckoned with, Landry must shift gears. He invites her to join the St. Josephine Sugarcane Society as they plan their annual harvest festival. In this scene, Charley sits on Landry's veranda alongside the parish's wealthy and powerful while they act, subtly or otherwise, as if she doesn't exist. Charley gets the message loud and clear: You are not wanted here.
