Season 3 Episode 309
CC | tv-pg
Queen Sugar showrunner Kat Candler and producing director DeMane Davis discuss Episode 309, "The Tree and Stone Were One", directed by Nijla Mu'min. Kat and DeMane continue their conversation about Micah's journey into activism, which takes an unexpected turn in the episode. "This plan was hatched in Micah's house," DeMane says. "He was a part of it, not the leader in any kind of way, but certainly wanting to be a part of what they were going to do, thinking that he could be a force for change and a force for good. And then, this accident happens amongst the actual incident, which whether you agree with it or not, it's just noble intentions and it just goes wrong."

"Leading up to it, my heart is just racing in the whole moment as to what's to come for these guys," Kat adds.

Then, Kat and DeMane address the scene where Nova confesses the truth about her relationship with Remy to Charley. Kat reveals that quite a bit of work went into crafting this scene in just the right way. "It was a scene that Anthony Sparks and I co-wrote," she says. "He took a crack at the scene, and I took a crack at the scene separately. And then we sort of combined forces between our two versions of it to kind of find this balance between this very uncomfortable conversation and situation. And in the room, we had talked about, you know, this could be this brawl between these two sisters, but it was nice to see Charley have this very mature response to it."

Finally, Kat and DeMane analyze the moment where Charley faces Frances Landry for the first time—and wonder about the dangerous game that Charley has entered into with Jacob, Frances and their treacherous family.
