Director Julie Dash on Key Moments in the Midseason Premiere

Season 2 Episode 209
Aired on 10/03/2017 | CC tv-pg
Queen Sugar creator Ava DuVernay calls director Julie Dash an "icon for women filmmakers, for black filmmakers," whose highly-regarded indie movie Daughters of the Dust was the first feature-length film directed by an African-American woman to receive theatrical distribution in the United States. Now, with two episodes to her name, she's part of the Queen Sugar family.

Here, Julie offers insight on two scenes she loved directing in the midseason premiere: Charley's mom questioning her daughter's choices as they tour her new loft, and Nova's challenging Q&A with Ninth Ward community members who feel her front-page article on Zika amounted to fearmongering.
