Patient Story #1: Miasha's Experience of Peripartum Cardiomyopathy

Meet Miasha, a former nurse and the mother of six beautiful children. Here, Miasha tells the harrowing story of her sixth pregnancy, during which time she developed peripartum cardiomyopathy or PPCM, a rare disorder in which a pregnant woman's heart becomes weakened and enlarged. (PPCM will typically develop during the last month of pregnancy, or within 5 months after the baby is born.)

After multiple hospital stays, a litany of medications and even a brush with death, Miasha is now thriving under the care of a trusted cardiologist. Her story highlights Black women's urgent need for compassionate and fast-acting maternal health care providers who take their patients' concerns seriously.
