Being part of a family involves some degree of negotiation. Singer/actor/theater performer Vanessa Williams says she has always made sure to seek the buy-in from her family before making a huge decision. At times, she says, she's turned down big projects because it wouldn't work well for the family. However, she told Maria Shriver in a 2007 interview that showing your children that you love what you do is extremely important. Here, Vanessa elaborates on what it means to be independent within a strong family.
