Oprah Sets Up Gayle's Mom on a Blind Date

Aired on 05/14/1990 | CC
On a 1990 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah invited sons and daughters to surprise their single mothers with blind-date matches. For Gayle's mom, Peggy King, Oprah played cupid herself. Oprah was very particular about her selection for her "second mom," but she finally felt she found a good match for Peggy in single father Henry Brown.

"There have been times when I've got myself in trouble. She's the person I can call at three o'clock in the morning," Oprah said, describing Peggy. "She's fun and she's funny and she's gregarious and all the things that make her as dear to me as a second mom, as she is to Gayle. I feel like her other daughter and I have to be very protective about who I go around fixing her up with."

Here, Oprah gleefully skips and hollers as Peggy walks on to meet her charming match. After being widowed for 17 years, Peggy says she looks forward to the date, and Oprah relishes in the pair's first sweet and shy encounter, as they prepared for a romantic lunch together.
