Aired on 05/27/1997 | CC tv-pg
Lamar Shanock had been through a lot by the time he was sitting in Oprah's audience in 1997, preparing to study engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. When he was 4, his mother had been shot and killed by her boyfriend, and his grandmother had passed away only seven months later. His Aunt Dietrich swooped in to save him and his three sisters. Lamar credited Dietrich with getting him on a scholarly path when the odds were stacked against him.

Here, Oprah surprises Lamar and his cousin Dara with extra funds to help cover their tuition. Plus, Dietrich opens up to Oprah about her secret to raising 10 children to be so solidly grounded and academically successful.
