How One Mom Found Strength After Her Daughter's Death

Aired on 04/17/2000 | CC
There's nothing more painful for a parent than losing a child. Jules and Jan Broom's only child, Shannon, died in a car accident when she was 23 years old. While sorting through Shannon's belongings, the mourning parents came across her gratitude journal, which she'd been writing in every day. Gratitude journals, which were popularized by The Oprah Winfrey Show, are daily diaries that focus on things for which we're thankful. For the Brooms, it was evidence that their daughter was happy, and they wanted to share her joy with the world—hopefully changing a few lives in the process. Here, Jan describes the gratitude bookmarks they created in their daughter's memory.
