Why Michael McCary Kept His Multiple Sclerosis a Secret

Season 4 Episode 409
Aired on 11/05/2016 | CC tv-14
Former Boyz II Men member Michael McCary was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 28, but it's taken him 16 years to reveal his health condition—not just to the public but also to those closest to him.

As Michael tells Iyanla during a one-on-one session at the House of Healing, he kept his MS a secret from everyone in his family, even his wife, before and after his diagnosis. "She didn't even know," Michael says of his now ex-wife. "It became a situation where I didn't trust her anymore."

Michael's trust issues also extended outside his marriage, coming between him and his fellow artists in Boyz II Men. "I stopped trusting the brothers when I was about 29," he says. "I went through a depression, and it just started to separate me more."

Tensions mounted within the group as Michael's pain, symptoms and doctor visits began to interfere with life on the road. Still, Michael kept Boyz II Men in the dark about his diagnosis. "They knew I had all the symptoms of MS, still, but they didn't know MS," he says. "Giving it a label wouldn't have changed the symptoms."

Iyanla takes issue with Michael's decision to withhold information and suffer in isolation. "You needed time, rest, healing; you didn't ask for it," she says. "Maybe they put you out to save the group because you didn't have enough sense to save yourself."
