Shelby Reveals His Suicidal Thoughts

After telling Iyanla about the trauma of his childhood molestation, Shelby "Soullow" Lowery lies with his head cradled in Iyanla's lap and confesses that his inner darkness has left him drained and exhausted as an adult. "I don't want to be here no more," he says, breaking into tears. "I want to give up."

"Shelby, it is unkind and unloving to expect yourself to be able to do something that you don't know how to do, that no one ever taught you to do," Iyanla says. "It's not that you want to die, Shelby; it's that you've never been taught how to live. You've never been taught how to live, baby. You've been taught how to survive."
