The Talk Every Mom Must Have with Her Kids

Season 4 Episode 416
Aired on 05/13/2017 | CC tv-pg
When you become a mother, you also become a teacher. Yet, many moms forget to have a crucial conversation about an important topic: themselves.

As Iyanla Vanzant explains to Alicia, a 50-year-old mother of six who has been keeping secrets from her adult daughters, it's vital that children know who their mothers are as women. "I remember the day that I told my daughters, 'Before I was your mother, I was a broken little girl with nobody to talk to, and I grew up, but she didn't. And there's a part of me that's still a broken little girl, and, unfortunately, that's what I passed on to you. So, here's what I need you to know,'" Iyanla says.

Here, Iyanla explains why the chances of interrupting a pattern of dysfunction in the next generation are slim without this honest conversation.

Iyanla's work with Alicia and her daughters continues Saturday, May 13, at 9/8c.
