Iyanla Opens Up a Dialogue with Orlando Community Members About the Pulse Massacre

Season 4 Episode 423
Aired on 06/07/2017 | CC
While in Orlando, Florida, to work with six of the 50-plus survivors of the 2016 mass shooting at Pulse nightclub, Iyanla takes time to sit down with several other members of the community to discuss how they're doing in the wake of the tragedy. The group includes Orlando City Council member Patty Sheehan; Orlando City Commissioner Regina Hill, who says she lost both a daughter and a friend to murder; a former member of the New York Police Department who responded to the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001; a police officer who notified Pulse victims' family members of their deaths; a teacher and counselor in the local school system; a young member of the LGBTQ community; and a mural artist who travels globally using art to work through these types of tragedies.

Together with Iyanla, these community stakeholders offer their takes on what happened at Pulse that night—"Hatred became unleashed," Commissioner Sheehan says—as well as discuss the intersection of hate, mental health and accessible firearms. Iyanla, who expresses that she is both humbled and honored to be speaking with the group, also urges everyone to dedicate time to self-care and tend to their own feelings of grief before assisting others.

"Take care of yourselves," she says. "Call a thing a thing: If you're angry, say it. If you're hurt, say it. If you're tired, say it. If you're depleted, say it. Take. Care. Of. Yourselves."

After others in the group open up about their takeaways from the tragedy, one young man shares his empowering final thoughts. "No matter how many times the LGBTQ community gets knocked down, gets kicked in the mud, we'll get back up," he says. "We will always get back up."

Tune in Saturday, June 3, at 9/8c to see Iyanla's work with six survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting on the season finale of Iyanla: Fix My Life.
