Iyanla on How Parents Unintentionally Enable Their Children

Season 5 Episode 503

Francis Wright—mother to former hip-hop music executive Mickey "Memphitz" Wright—is the first to admit she's always swooped in to help her son before he could fall or make a mistake in his childhood. Although she believed this parenting approach was helping her son, Iyanla explains that it was actually robbing him of the opportunity to grow.

"Particularly with boy children, they thrive by making mistakes and recovering. Falling down and getting up. Figuring it out," Iyanla says. "Unfortunately, Mom, what you've been is an enabler. ... You've enabled him not to really learn who he was and stand in his power."

The result, Iyanla continues, is a lack of confidence and maturity. "In his soul, he's about 14," Iyanla says of Mickey. "That's what I see just in the way he pieces together reality and the story he tells. It's 14 years old."
