Iyanla's Moving Words About Honoring Black Trailblazers

Season 5 Episode 515
Aired on 04/14/2018 | CC
In the midst of working with Iyanla, Arica "Hazel-E" Adams comes to understand that when she disparages one black woman on the basis of skin tone, she disparages all black women around the world. And when Arica acknowledges her responsibility to speak with more thought and honor, Iyanla helps to drive the point home by explaining whom—specifically and especially—Arica has a responsibility to.

"You have a responsibility to Ruby Dee. You have a responsibility to Harriet Tubman. You have a responsibility to Dorothy and to Septima and to Rosa," Iyanla says. "They are the reason we sit here. When Della and Gladys and Pearl had to walk in a back door of a theater so that we could get on there today in a thong, that's who you open your mouth for."

Iyanla also asks Arica to forgive members of Iyanla's generation for their collective role in not educating Arica about what is and isn't acceptable, and reiterates to Arica how much she matters in hopes of convincing her of that truth.
