A Father with Substance Abuse Problems Explains His Trouble with Rehab

Season 4 Episode 407
Aired on 10/15/2016 | CC
Dwight Henry's numerous infidelities have contributed to the total breakdown his family is currently experiencing, but that's not the only troubling behavior he's exhibited that is tearing the Henrys apart. Dwight is also struggling with substance abuse.

Sitting down with Iyanla for a one-on-one session, the 42-year-old father of four admits that he has turned to cocaine, marijuana and alcohol to cope with the various challenges in his life. At first, Dwight attempts to explain away his drinking and drug use. "It's only when circumstances arise that I resort to those things," he says. "I use it as a crutch."

"So, you have a problem," Iyanla says gently. "Because people don't use crutches unless something's broken."

Dwight nods. Iyanla then asks him if he's ever considered treatment for substance abuse, but Dwight points out that rehab is too much of a financial burden, even though "it would be definitely helpful." So, Iyanla makes Dwight an offer.

"What if it didn't cost you anything?" she says.

"And everything at home would be okay?" he says. "I'd go tomorrow."
