A Drug Dealer's Daughter Says Her Family Lived "the Typical Life"

Season 5 Episode 513
Aired on 09/15/2018 | CC
Despite being sentenced to 10 years in prison for her involvement with a drug dealer, Brandi admits that she's always been comfortable with the lifestyle—in fact, she always sought it out. As the 36-year-old tells Iyanla, her beloved father was a drug dealer who, she says, set an example that she always wanted to emulate.

"He was a drug dealer, but he never hung out late at night. I looked at my dad like, 'That's the type of man I want,' because he was always at home; he took care of his family," Brandi says. "My mom didn't work. She was a house mom, you know, took care of her kids. For me, it was like we lived the typical life. Like, we traveled. We went to private school."

Brandi adds that she's never dated someone who wasn't a drug dealer, prompting Iyanla to ask the formerly incarcerated mom a pointed question: "Did it ever dawn on you that these black men were pouring poison into the lives of other black people?"
