A Daughter Tearfully Recalls Her Father's Vindictive Reaction to Her Car Accident

Season 4 Episode 406
Aired on 10/08/2016 | CC
Twenty-two-year-old Avanté has long been caught in the middle between her parents. Her father, Dwight, frequently cheats on her mother, Thelisha, and appears to struggle with drugs and alcohol. Thelisha, on the other hand, has completely shut down as a wife and, as Iyanla puts it, has made her daughters her "emotional husband" by leaning on them in times of personal crisis. Because of this, Avanté fully admits that she does not get along with her father, which eventually led to him kicking her out of the family's home the summer after her sophomore year of college.

"He kicked me out that summer because he felt as though I was being disrespectful to him, and he felt as though I was being disrespectful because I wasn't speaking to him," Avanté says.

In the process of leaving, Avanté continues, she got into a terrible car accident that left her shaken and her car totaled. However, her father's reaction was more painful than the wreck itself.

"I was on the phone with my mom. I was like, 'Mommy, I just got into an accident.' I'm crying my eyes out," Avanté recalls. "She's trying to come see me. He wouldn't give her the keys to come see me."
