Markis Insists His Brothers Are Better Off Without Him

As one of the older brothers in a family of eight children, Markis has long felt responsible for protecting and caring for his siblings, even now in adulthood. Seeing his brothers in pain because of the abuse, neglect and loss they've all experienced is nearly unbearable for Markis, who has displayed destructive behavior that Iyanla fears could get him killed.

"I feel like all of y'all could do better if I just wasn't here," Markis insists. "Y'all intelligent men."

"And you're not?" Iyanla immediately interrupts.

In the above clip, Iyanla and Markis' brothers try to get him to recognize his value and understand that he doesn't want to die—he just wants to stop hurting.
