5 Troubled Brothers Learn the Meanings of Their Names

Season 5 Episode 506
Aired on 03/10/2018 | CC tv-14
Having grown up with a Native American grandmother, Iyanla says that understanding culture has always been a big part of her life. "One of the things that I learned growing up was how important a name is," Iyanla says. "You know, in Native American and African cultures—many indigenous cultures—you don't just pick a name out of a book."

While sitting with her guests, five brothers whose names all begin with the letter M, Iyanla explains the belief that "your name is your nature," and tells each man what his name means: Michael and Mikuel both mean "a man for God," Markis means "you carry on joy," Marvin means "fortress of the sea," and Melvin means "gentle chief."
