The Bishop Tells Jacob That He Filed for Divorce

Season 3 Episode 303
Aired on 09/05/2018 | CC
After serving Lady Mae with divorce papers, the bishop has been on edge all day. He pays a visit to Jacob at Triumph, hoping for some news. When the bishop walks in, Jacob senses something is off with his father. The bishop asks his son whether he's heard from his mom, and when Jacob says no, his father's silence is concerning and prompts him to ask what's going on.

Rather than answering directly, the bishop launches into a story about when he first asked Lady Mae to marry him. He reveals that she initially rejected his proposal, but he wanted her to know how he really felt about her. "I closed down my little storefront church, got out of my lease and moved out of my apartment and packed up my car," he says.

"Where were you going?" Jacob asks.

"I didn't know," the bishop answers. "I just wanted your mother to know how seriously I took where she was going. And that without her, I was done with my life."

"So what happened?"

"She didn't go."

"Pop, why are you telling me all this?"

"You know as well as I do that she's the same woman today that she was back then," the bishop says, his eyes beginning to well up with tears. "If you're going to get her to change her stubborn little mind, you had to be bold. I might have been a little...too."

Finally, after Jacob asks him point-blank what he's done, the bishop reveals that he filed for divorce—leaving Jacob in a state of shock.
