Sophia to Grace: "I'm Not Going to Church Anymore"

Sophia's spirit was broken after learning she can no longer bear children. Then, a touchy conversation with her boyfriend, Roberto, about her inability to have children left Sophia feeling even more disheartened. Finally, Sophia goes to her mother and begs her to fill in for her at the Little Saints service.

"How can I stand there and tell kids God is good when he isn't?" Sophia says, sobbing.

"Oh, Sophia," Grace says, taken aback.

"He's not," Sophia exclaims. "I'm not going to church anymore."

Sophia reminds her mother that she quit going for 20 years. Grace tries to explain that she made a mistake leaving the church, but Sophia's faith has crumbled. "It's all just a racket," she says, getting to her feet. "Things just happen; that's all there is. I'm not going." And with that, she exits the room, leaving her mother in stunned silence.
