Pastor Maxine Encourages Lady Mae to Take Over Calvary

After a long night out, Lady Mae visits her longtime friend Pastor Maxine Patterson. Lady Mae reveals to Maxine that she plans to divorce James, admitting that her friend was right all along. "Why didn't I listen to you? I should have listened to you," Lady Mae says.

"It's okay," Maxine responds. "You were after that—you know."

Lady Mae cuts in, "M.R.S."

"When you should have been looking for the M," Maxine continues. "The master of divinity. Something no man could take from you."

Lady Mae then shares her aspirations to go back to school and get her degree in order to pursue her dreams of being the pastor of her own church. "Now why would you do that?" Maxine says flatly.

"What? You don't think that's a good idea?" Lady Mae replies.

"Girl, you already got a perfectly good one," Maxine answers. The pastor offers Lady Mae a new perspective on how to achieve her dreams, encouraging her old friend to stick around at Calvary in order to accomplish them. "You stay. Fix it up. Take over, Mae. It's yours."
