Lady Mae invites the bishop over for dinner in order to reveal her long-kept secret about who Grace's biological father is: Lionel. Once she finally confesses, the bishop is taken aback. As they share a long silence, Lady Mae anxiously waits for the bishop to react. When he finally does, Lady Mae is surprised by his response. "Well, now we're even," he tells her calmly.
"That's it? That's all you have to say to me?" Lady Mae responds, flustered. "I'm telling you the scariest secret in my whole life, and that's it? That's all you have to say—"
The bishop cuts in. "But it isn't, is it?" he says, as a small smile forms on his face.
"No."
"And you can't lose me over it," he continues. "And you've already kicked me out the door."
The bishop and Lady Mae share a short laugh, and then, Lady Mae asks him to come back home. "On one condition," James tells her. "This uncertainty and shame that you felt over Grace's...lineage—"
"What about it?" Lady Mae interrupts sharply.
"That what set you so against her from the day she was born?"
Lady Mae takes a moment to answer. "I don't know that," she says, choking up. "And, ooh, her stubbornness, I just can't—"
The bishop cuts her off, "Then you and your daughter are more alike than you want to admit."
"We're mildly alike," she concedes.
The bishop chuckles softly. Then, locking eyes with Lady Mae, he leans in and says, "So heal it. Would you sit with her and heal it? Please?"
