Lady Mae Checks In on Noah

Is Grace hooking up with Noah, her old flame?

Noah's wedding to his fiancée, Isabel, is just around the corner, but Grace's return to Memphis has Noah confused and Grace's mother anxious. For her part, Lady Mae wants Grace to head back to Phoenix, and she knows that a rekindling of romance between Noah and Grace would only extend her stay and threaten the family's stability.

Not long ago, to send a subtle message that Grace cannot be trusted, Lady Mae asked Noah, who also heads security for the Greenleafs, to keep an eye on Grace. He has been keeping an eye on her—but not in the way Lady Mae intended.

As Noah walks down a hallway at Calvary, Lady Mae sidles up to him. "You're looking more chiseled than usual," she says, with more than dollop of butter.

"Isabel's got me pretty busy for this," Noah replies, referring to the wedding.

"Oh, I am sure she does," Lady Mae says. "I remember reading that planning a wedding is the ninth-most stressful thing a person can experience in life."

"That sounds about right."

"Yeah, and the 10th is being fired," Lady Mae says, smiling.

"Ah, I'll have to have a look at that list," Noah says, looking a little uncomfortable.

"I'll be sure to send it to you," Lady Mae says, wrapping her arm around Noah's. "Noah, do you remember back when Gigi arrived and I asked you to keep an eye on her for me?"

Noah pauses. "Yes, ma'am."

"This David Nelson fiasco, it's such a bad penny," Lady Mae says, referring the Memphis police officer who was recently accused of shooting and killing an unarmed African-American teenager.

"Yeah, I knew nothing about that," Noah says.

"Oh, I'm sure you didn't, but it got me wondering if there's something else, though, that I should know about," Lady Mae says.

"No, not that I know of," Noah says.

"Noah," Lady says, stopping them in their tracks and turns to face Noah directly.

"Yes, ma'am?"

"There's something you're not telling me. I know that look," Lady Mae says as her anger begins bubbling to the surface.

Noah lowers his eyes and pauses for a moment. Then, he says, "Isabel and I have been talking about moving after the wedding."

A look of relief washes over Lady Mae's face. "Moving? Marvelous! Where?"

"Denver. She's got people there," Noah says.

They begin walking again. "Then why haven't you said anything?" Lady Mae asks.

"Ah, I don't know," Noah says. "I guess I felt bad. You and the bishop have been doing so much—"

"It's a gift," Lady Mae says. "No strings. Oh, this is so exciting!"

"Thank you for understanding," Noah says.

"Oh, you don't have to thank me," Lady Mae says. "It is our pleasure. Well, run along. I know you have things to do. Busy man! Go on."

"God is good," Noah says.

"All the time," Lady Mae completes the thought.
