Grace Questions Her Mother About Lionel

On the eve of A Day with Lady Mae, Grace learns that Lionel could possibly be her father, and she goes to her mother to get the truth. However, Grace asking the question sends Lady Mae into dismay. Barely holding on to her composure, she tells Grace that she doesn't know whether Lionel is her father—and gets right to her bottom line.

"Do you intend on using this against me?" Lady Mae says tearfully. "Do you? Because if you do, do it now. Just scream it down the halls of the church. Go on, Grace. Do it and save me."

Grace looks at her mother with disappointment and hurt. "I would never do that, Mama. You know that," she says, her voice breaking.

"Then please, please, Grace," Lady Mae begs. "I never want to speak about this again. Please."

Grace looks at her mother in silence as Lady Mae turns and solemnly walks away.
