Dr. Vanzant Counsels Charity Through Her Pain

Season 3 Episode 306
Aired on 10/03/2018 | CC tv-pg
Per Maxine Patterson's suggestion, Lady Mae calls on Dr. Iyanla Vanzant to help Charity after her meltdown at the hospital. Dr. Vanzant receives a chilly reception upon visiting Charity's suite, but that doesn't stop the therapist from speaking her mind. "I am not going to fight you for your healing," she tells Charity. "But before I go, I just want you to know that when I look at you, I see so many breaks in so many places. And all I see is pain."

Charity denies that she's in any pain, but Dr. Vanzant isn't buying it and calmly points out the signs of crisis in the young mother's life. Charity eventually sits down with Dr. Vanzant, and she opens up to the therapist that she feels like nobody cares about her, especially Lady Mae.

"She doesn't want me to be an embarrassment," Charity says of her mother.

"Did you embarrass her by marrying a man who's gay? Or did you embarrass yourself by marrying a man who could never love you the way you want to be loved?" Dr. Vanzant asks quietly but firmly.

This question strikes a nerve in Charity, anger and shame washing over her face, but after her initial defensiveness subsides, she reveals that being with Kevin made her feel safe. This confession intrigues Dr. Vanzant. "When did you start feeling or believing that you weren't safe?" she asks Charity.

"I've never felt safe," Charity replies tearfully.

Seeing an opening, Dr. Vanzant pushes through. "Never? You live in this great big beautiful house behind a gate, with a guard, and you don't feel safe? Why wouldn't you feel safe? Maybe the real question is..." she says before pausing, getting up and sitting back down again next to Charity, "What would it take for you to feel safe?"
