Inside the Episode: "Day of Reckoning"

Season 3 Episode 312
CC
Greenleaf show creator Craig Wright and executive producer Kriss Turner Towner discuss Episode 312, "Day of Reckoning." Craig and Kriss kick off their conversation by addressing the emotional moment where Grace asks her mother whether Lionel is her biological father. "We knew that if we were going to do it, it had to lead to a shift in the Grace–Lady Mae dynamic," Craig says. "So, this is the beginning of that shift. You finally understand why your mother is so mean to you, but now you feel distant from your dad. And I feel very bad for Grace at that moment. And all Grace cares about is the truth, so at least it starts to uncover the truth of things."

Craig and Kriss then jump to the tense scene where Basie Skanks pulls a gun on the bishop in his office while Lady Mae is preaching at her event. "I like that as Lady Mae is having her day, Bishop is suffering in many ways," Kriss says.

"To have the juxtaposition of Lady Mae alongside him finally paying the price for what he did, it makes it very clear the morality of the show," Craig adds. "Which is it's not about women taking it from men. It is about men finally paying the price for what they did, and women being ready to step up."

Craig then shifts the conversation toward the meaning behind the episode's title. "When we called the episode 'Day of Reckoning,' it was more about a day of reckoning for the bishop, because Lady Mae comes up there, and she delivers the goods," Craig explains. "So, what are you going to do now, Bishop? Like, it's over. You don't have the moral high ground; she can do it just as well or better than you can. What have you got?"

Finally, Craig and Kriss praise the scene where Lady Mae preaches at her event, and share their admiration for Lynn Whitfield's performance in that moment.
