Inside the Episode: Iyanla Vanzant Visits the Greenleaf Family

Greenleaf show creator Craig Wright and executive producer Kriss Turner Towner discuss Episode 306, "She Changes Everything." One of the key plot points that they delve into is the bishop's work with Rochelle to handle Calvary's hefty tax bill. Craig mentions that although the bishop is desperate to save his church, he may be tempted to get closer to Rochelle too.

Kriss points out that Rochelle is the only person who has been willing to help out the struggling church leader. "I don't think he has a friend in the world or anybody that's trying to help him out. That's number one," Kriss adds. "Everybody is like, 'How could you let this happen?' And she's the only who says, 'I can help you.'"

"She brings what looks like good evidence to the table," Craig says. "People are making money [investing in cryptocurrency], but he's blinded by vanity. This beautiful young woman pays him all this attention. She hasn't given him any evidence that she wants to hurt him, whereas Lady Mae is, you know, doing everything she can to destroy him."

Craig and Kriss also discuss Iyanla Vanzant's cameo on the show and the seamless way she wove her real-world skills into the scripted drama. "She genuinely cared about the character," Kriss says. "She took the character of Charity and saw the dynamics between Lady Mae and Bishop and just—I mean she got into what the situation was that we had created."

"She treated them like they were real people," Craig adds. "That was great."

Finally, Craig and Kriss look back on how Greenleaf began as a series that focused on the relationship between a mother and daughter, and reflect on how it has grown into a show that—perhaps more so than any other on TV—explores women's spiritual journeys and the challenges they face along the way.
