D.L. Hughley's Fear for His Son With Autism: Defiance Could Get Him Killed

Season 2 Episode 204
Aired on 06/02/2018 | CC
D.L. Hughley's son, Kyle, was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, during his childhood. The diagnosis can be frightening for any parent, but as a black father, the actor/comedian says that he was particularly scared that his son's behavior out in the world could be misconstrued and get him killed.

"When they used to tell me Kyle was defiant, what I recognized, a long time ago, is that defiance is what gets young black men killed," D.L. says. "To somebody of a different culture ... that [behavior] may seem mischievous or he dances to his own beat. When it's our culture, somebody gets killed."

Here, D.L. opens up about feeling a responsibility to prepare his son to face the world as a black man, and he is overcome with emotion as he discusses his own perceived failures as a parent in his efforts to keep his son safe.
