In 1949, Katherine and Joe Jackson were married in Crown Point, Indiana, just outside of Gary. Over the next 17 years, they would have nine children.

By 1968, the Jackson 5 signed with Motown Records and quickly became a pop-music phenomenon with hits like "I Want You Back," "ABC," "I'll Be There" and "Never Can Say Goodbye." In 1971, the family moved from their home in Gary to a compound in Encino, California, called Hayvenhurst.

After leaving the Motown label in 1975, the Jackson 5 changed their name to the Jacksons and continued producing hit singles like "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)."
