In 1949, Katherine and Joe Jackson were married in Crown Point, Indiana, just outside of Gary. Over the next 17 years, they would have nine children.

While still living in their tiny home in Gary, brothers JackieTito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael formed a musical group that became known as the Jackson 5.

By 1968, the Jackson 5 signed with Motown Records and quickly became a pop-music phenomenon with hits like "I Want You Back," "ABC," "I'll Be There" and "Never Can Say Goodbye." In 1971, the family moved from their home in Gary to a compound in Encino, California, called Hayvenhurst.

After leaving the Motown label in 1975, the Jackson 5 changed their name to the Jacksons and continued producing hit singles like "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)."
