Designs by Beyoncé
But, it's Beyoncé's latest venture that's getting all the buzz these days. For the past two years, Beyoncé and her mother, Tina, have been designing a fabulous new fashion line called the House of Deréon!
The House of Deréon, which was named after Beyoncé's grandmother, celebrates three generations of style—her grandmother's '40s-inspired style, her mom's '70s-inspired attire and Beyoncé's unique take on today's trends.
Beyoncé says she wanted to create an affordable line that had the look and fit of expensive couture... like the dresses she wore during her three incredible Oscar® performances!
Beyoncé says she had four costume changes on Oscar® night and two almost ended in disaster! While wearing her fourth dress—an elegant blue gown—Beyoncé says the boning that held up the dress began to curve outwards while she was sitting down at dinner...making her look pregnant! Beyoncé gracefully held the back of the dress taunt as she passed awaiting paparazzi to avoid any false rumors.
During her third costume change of the evening, Beyoncé's shoe fell off—on stage! Thankfully, it stayed hidden beneath her dress during the performance.
In the early years, when Beyoncé and Destiny's Child were first starting out, Tina sewed the girls' costumes by hand and bought the fabric with what little money they could spare.
"Nobody would lend me clothes because [Destiny's Child] wasn't big enough then," Tina says. "When I needed the help, they wouldn't give it to us. Then, after they got the money to buy the clothes, everybody wanted to give us clothes!"
Once Beyoncé and the other members of Destiny's Child started sporting Tina's designs on the red carpet, reporters started asking when Tina's clothing line would be in stores...which got her thinking. Many meetings later, the House of Deréon was born! Beyoncé says she's known for years that her mother was a fashion designer at heart.
"[My mother is] gifted, and it just was natural for us to do this line because this is our life," Beyoncé says. "She's been doing it for years."
"[My mom] is one of those people that you feel honored to meet," Beyoncé says. "And no matter who you are, you fall in love with her because she is spiritual, she's inspiring, she's strong, she's funny, she's creative, she's talented...she's everything that I want to be."
What's the best thing that Tina has taught her daughter...besides a great sense of style? Beyoncé says her mom taught her "to concentrate on your inner beauty and your spirit because that's what shines through."
