Why Dr. Shefali Wants Parent to Lose Their Ego-Based Agendas

Season 4 Episode 411
Aired on 09/28/2014 | CC tv-14
Are you parenting with an egoic agenda? During a Lifeclass Social Lab filled with an audience of mothers and fathers, parenting expert Dr. Shefali Tsabary explains why she believes parents fall into the trap of asserting "supreme control" over their children.

"The parenting journey is such a tricky one because we are in charge," Dr. Shefali says. "We have to provide guidance, we have to be there, we have to serve. This 'being in charge' makes us fall into the trap and the delusion of believing that this certainly must mean now we have supreme control. For many of us who grew feeling invalidated and disempowered, this then becomes a head trip. It becomes an egoic agenda we carry forth, and becomes less about listening and connecting to our children, and more about that head trip of getting our agenda met."

Rather than perpetuating the cycle, Dr. Shefali asks that parents take a different approach. Find out why she believes this can save a generation of children from spending their adult lives searching for validation.
