***Ruby began years ago, when I was in a writing workshop taught by the late Ayofemi Folayan, who was an author and poet. She gave me this prompt. The image of an angel food cake drifted into my mind, and then I saw a man carrying it. That was the beginning of more than 10 years of work—and a novel.
