If you’re looking for a way to add some life to a balcony, windowsill or other outdoor space, a french container garden is the perfect addition to any home. Designer Jeremiah Brent demonstrates how easy it is to make a garden anywhere with these beautiful plantings. Using galvanized metal pots and pails, he first rubs them with steel wool to scratch up the surface so the paint will better stick to the surface. Next, he uses a simple candle and gently rubs it around parts of the metal surface so that paint won’t stick where the wax is. When painted (he uses gray, white and yellow paint), this gives the metal a gorgeous, slightly distressed design that looks antiqued. Once the paint is dry, he shows how to apply fun black decals with white lettering to label what each of the plants is. Finally, he fills each one with potting soil and then carefully plants the flowers and herbs of his choosing, first massaging the roots of the new plants so they can better catch onto the soil. Voilà-- a garden full of fresh smelling blooms is ready to go.
