Melanie told her husband David they had won tickets to The Oprah Winfrey Show so Kitty Bartholomew and her team could turn their bleak, barren patio into a surfing safari paradise…in just 24 hours!
After cleaning the concrete patio, Kitty laid down indoor/outdoor Astroturf. She built a planter to give the patio a tropical feel. Seashells on the outside of the planter and tiki torches completed the island look.
The team enclosed a portion of the patio with three lattice walls and a roof. They used the lattice to hang accessories like a surfboard and wetsuit.
Next, the team created a tiki bar under the lattice and covered the outside of the bar with grass thatching.
Kitty accessorized the space with tiki lights and surfing memorabilia.
Kitty hung stuffed parrots from the gutters. She brushed shutters on the outside of the house with a paint wash—not too perfectly—to give them a sun-bleached look.
Kitty placed four patio chairs in bright fabrics around an outdoor table. She used thatching to cover the patio umbrellaan instant beach hut!
