Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil, plus more for frying
  • 1 onion, cut in 1/4" half rounds
  • Kosher salt
  • 4 hot dogs, preferably Thumann's brand skinless pork and beef
  • 1 cup Cheez Whiz
  • 4 hot dog buns, preferably Sabrett brand

    Directions

    Total time: 30 minutes

     In a small skillet, heat 1 Tbsp. oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned, about 5 minutes. Salt to taste. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Meanwhile, line a clean plate with paper towels and set aside. In a deep pot, heat 2 to 3 inches oil over medium-high heat until a deep-fry thermometer reaches 375. Using a slotted spoon or tongs, carefully lower hot dog into oil. Cook until deep golden brown, 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to prepared plate and let rest 1 minute. In a microwave safe bowl, heat Cheez Whiz on high for 30 seconds. Stir and heat another 30 seconds. Continue this process until it is hot enough to pour, 1 to 2 minutes total. Place hot dogs in buns, pour 1/4 cup Cheez Whiz on each hot dog, and top with sauteed onions. Serve immediately.
