While Mangrum used colored extensions on Oprah, you can attach a faux pony for an easier take or simply work with your natural hair.
Part strands down the center and smooth into a low pony. Apply a dab of pomade or molding clay around the hairline to keep edges down.
Enhance just the tail by wrapping sections around a 1/2-inch curling iron, and add an ombré combo of temporary colors.
It's no-holds-barred when you use no-commitment washout color. Paint it on dry hair and lock in the color with a blow-dryer. Clairol Color Crave Hair Makeup, $11; drugstores.
Living Proof Style Lab Molding Clay, $26; LivingProof.com.
