Class, pick up your pencils. Also your can of spray paint, some gouache, and maybe a smidgen of soot. As one look at the Museum of Modern Art's Compass in Hand: Selections from the Judith Rothschild Foundation Contemporary Drawings Collection will tell you, the definition of drawing in the 21st century has expanded to include a vast array of styles, materials, and methods. Among the offerings on display in these pages and at MoMA (through July 27, 2009): Robert Rauschenberg's architectural assemblage of packing tape and mailing labels; Edward Ruscha's gritty urban epiphany in gunpowder and pastel; and Elizabeth Peyton's portrait of David Hockney in pencil on notebook paper—tradition with an androgynous twist.
