Bear says there are three things he always takes with him on his life or death excursions: a flint striker to get a fire going, his faith and a laminated picture of his family.

Should you ever be in trouble, Bear says ordinary items can help you survive. "So much of survival is just about common sense as using your imagination," Bear says.

After looking through the purses of audience members, Bear found the following items that can help you survive a dangerous situation:

  • Tampons. Bear says the cotton inside a tampon is great for starting a fire and can even last for three or four fires.
  • Condoms. Bear says to blow the condom up like a balloon and place it inside one of your socks. Fill it with water and you can carry about a liter and a half with you!
  • Camera film. Again, Bear says this is a great item to keep a fire going with.
  • Lipstick. If you're stranded in the desert, Bear says to use it to write SOS on the top of your car.
  • Dental floss. Bear says its strength will help you bind things and build a shelter.
  • Compact mirror. Signal to airplanes by flashing it into the light. Bear says someone was rescued from more than 100 miles away by signaling to an airplane like that!
