Marilyn continued to live as the "house police" for seven years. "Unbeknownst to me," she says, "he began abusing Luis. He raped my son."
Although Luis kept his stepfather's dirty secret, his behavior suggested that something was wrong. "He gained weight," Marilyn remembers. "He started doing badly in school. He was having a lot of stomach pains. … I asked him, 'Luis, is your [stepdad] touching your privates? Is he touching your penis? Your behind? Is he doing anything to make you feel uncomfortable? Bad?' And he denied it." Marilyn also confronted her husband, who also denied the abuse.
It wasn't until one night when Marilyn discovered Luis in his room sobbing uncontrollably that the truth came out. "We just sat there on the bed," Marilyn remembers tearfully, "and cried together."
