Six months after marrying her husband, Marilyn began to suspect that something wasn't right between her sons and their stepfather. "I prayed," she says, "and I really feel like God told me what was happening in my home. And I confronted my husband and he confessed to it. I then called the police, called child services. Detectives came and interviewed the children. When they questioned them—since they had been molested when they were sleeping—they had no knowledge that they had been molested. … At the time, Luis was 5. Roy was 7."
Marilyn says she stayed in the marriage because her husband agreed to enter a sex offender program. "That was his thing," she says, "'I need help. I can't control myself.' … I decided, well, I'm just going to have to keep an eagle eye on him while he's in treatment to see whether this is really going to work. So [at the time] I'm six months pregnant, and at night I would sleep on the floor of our bedroom right in front of the door to make sure he wouldn't get out."
