Harold and Annette Simmons, Oprah's dear friends and neighbors in Santa Barbara, California, know how much she loves sweet potatoes. So a while ago, they sent her a bunch of them. "They were the best sweet potatoes I have ever had," Oprah says. Turns out, they're from a small Texas town called Golden, where nine sweet potato farmers—most of them third-generation farmers—harvest about two million pounds of the spuds each year!

Sweet potatoes are so popular in this tiny town of 150, they even have their own special day. It starts with a parade and continues with family games—they even have a bake-off where everything is cooked with sweet potatoes! But the highlight of the sweet potato festival is the auction, which raises money for local needy families.
