Maria Shriver: The Importance of Family

Her Marriage
Maria ShriverMaria Shriver has a full family life. She and Arnold Schwarzenegger married in 1986. They now have four children: Katherine, 11 years old; Christina, 10 years old; Patrick, 8 years old; and Christopher, 4 years old.

Her Children
She is an award-winning journalist and a best-selling author, but Maria says she spends most of her time with her kids. "I try to do a lot of one-on-one time with my kids," says Maria. "Just like millions of other [parents] out there, you're trying to find a way to get into your child's inner life and connect with them."

Her Parents
Although Maria's parents are both public figures in their own rights, they still are Maria's biggest admirers. Maria says, "They are still actively involved in my life. Whenever I have a story on, they're the first people to call."

Her Father
Sargent Shriver"I think maybe the only contribution that I had partial responsibility for was to give Maria a life with a happy father and mother: to give her a life where from the time she was born to the time she was married, she knew that she was loved upside-down and backwards. She knew that she was admired. She knew that no matter what happened, her mother and father were there for her first and always." — Sargent Shriver

Her Mother
Eunice ShriverMaria says her mother Eunice is the one who made her strong, but last year they switched roles when her mother was hospitalized for seven weeks. Doctors gave Eunice a zero percent chance of recovery. Maria says, "As I sat by her bedside, it was really the first time that I came face-to-face with my life without my mother. It made me reevaluate everything. The greatest thing for me was that when my mother was sick, there was nothing left unsaid. I am a big believer in telling people [I love them] while they are alive."

Maria's Dedication to Her Family
Maria's new book, What's Wrong with Timmy?, is dedicated to her family for their love and compassionate work with people with special needs. Read her dedication.
