Preventing E. Coli

Another summer danger is E. coli. It's not just a problem with contaminated food — both pools and zoos are potential breeding grounds for this bacteria infection.

Protect your children in the pool:
Make sure the chlorine level in pool is checked every hour.
Chlorine level should be one point five parts per million.
Children should avoid swallowing pool water.
Use swim diapers for toddlers.
Do not allow toddlers who've had diarrhea two weeks prior to swim in pools.
Do not change children near public pools.
Wash hands after changing diapers.

Protect your children at the zoo:
Petting zoos should make sure that signs and staff members warn visitors about the E. Coli risk.
Food handling and dining areas should be separated from animal interaction areas
Children should not carry toys or pacifiers near the animals
There should be easy access to running water, soap and disposable towels so visitors can wash up immediately after petting sessions.
Families should bring their own wipes for antibacterial washing.
