The Oprah Winfrey Show
Sex and Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Tiny Sarah Jessica Parker has become a huge star! She's made her mark on the big screen (The First Wives' Club) and the small screen (Square Pegs), and Broadway too. Now she's winning big ratings and big awards as the star of HBO's Sex and the City.

If that weren't enough, she's also recognized as a fashion icon, and has been married to actor Matthew Broderick for four years. Today Sarah Jessica talks candidly about her show, her shoes, and of course, the man who gives her character the most trouble, "Mr. Big."

Success in the City
Oprah: Can you believe what a big deal this show [Sex and the City] is? What do you think it is?

Sarah Jessica: I don't know and I don't ponder it much, for fear of putting some sort of terrible, you know, mojo on it or something. We have these writers that have found a voice that is resonant, that is new and fresh... I think mostly they've hooked into the way men and women feel about being single... but mostly just being alone and what that means.

Mr. Big
Oprah: Did you get letters from married women about you (Carrie) dating the married guy (Mr. Big)?

Sarah Jessica: I'm sure we [did]! It was obviously very provocative... The thing I liked most about it was that it illustrated a flaw in somebody who was the heartbeat of a show. In the end I think people understood it. I think it was upsetting and unattractive, but it was a story we felt we had to tell...

Oprah: He doesn't have a name... he's just "Big?"

Sarah Jessica: I don't even know his name. I have this fantasy that when the show finally comes to an end, if he and I aren't together, that just as he's walking away, and tears are streaming down my face, I scream after him, [dramatically] "What's your name??"

The Girl Loves Shoes!
Sarah Jessica: "I don't have to dig very deep to understand [Carrie's] affinity for shoes."

Oprah: It's always been that way for you? [A love for shoes]

Sarah Jessica: From the time I was a very little child, I recall very vividly going to shoe stores. We were allowed two pairs of shoes a year, and just picking up the leather and just smelling it, and becoming intoxicated by the smell of the fresh leather. Truly, I mean, I have no other problems!(laughing)

Oprah: How many pairs [of Manolo Blahnik shoes] would you say you have?

Sarah Jessica: I'm too ashamed...

Oprah: You can do it!

Sarah Jessica: Okay, my name is Sarah Jessica, and I own well over 100 pairs of Manolo Blahniks.
