A Doctor's Wake-up Call

"It's like PMS for three solid years... but if you do pay attention, it's a learning time."

Dr. Christiane Northrup, author of the best-selling Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom and her new book, The Wisdom of Menopause, is one of America's most trusted medical experts. She believes that menopause can be a positive experience — a time of clarity.

Listen to Your Life

According to Dr. Northrup, a lot of deep inner work goes on during menopause. You can become introspective for awhile, but when you come out of it on the other end, watch out! Dr. Northrup knows of what she speaks — when she went through menopause, she experienced a crisis that brought hidden conflicts within herself and her marriage to the surface.

Dr. Northrup says that you get flashes of inspiration that are every bit as traumatic as a hot flash — and you have to listen to them. In her own life, she became restless to change things that had needed changing for several years. The hormonal changes of menopause forced her to re-evaluate every relationship in her life.

"The process of menopause led to a new person, a new voice inside of me that said, 'Enough, enough — I'm not willing to sacrifice anymore. What about my life, what about me?'"

From Dead-End to Re-Birth

Dr. Northrup had developed a fibroid tumor in her uterus, which, she believes, represented pouring creative energy into dead-end endeavors. In her case, it represented her marriage. During menopause, she realized that by marrying her husband, she was trying to heal something very profound from her childhood.

Although Dr. Northrup's emotions ranged from grief to panic, it was the anger that gave her the courage to change. She says, "Based on my experiences, I would tell women: No matter what happens — you have nothing to fear. This is a rebirth."
